Is ‘Chaos Walking’ coming to Netflix?

Chaos Walking is a 2020 science fiction film based on the first book in Patrick Ness’ sci-fi trilogy with the same name. The film was first announced in 2011 and has undergone several rewrites since. Production finished in 2017, but the cast gathered for reshoots in 2019 following poor test screenings from audiences.

The film was released in South Korea on 24th February 2021 and will be released in the USA on 5th March 2021, nearly a decade after it was first announced. In the film, Tom Holland plays Todd Hewitt, a man tasked with protecting a woman (played by Daisy Ridley), who lands on a planet populated by men only.

Chaos Walking will not come to Netflix.

Lionsgate owns distribution rights to the film, and it doesn’t have a content-sharing deal in place with Netflix. Lionsgate and Netflix had a deal that expired in 2015, but the parties chose not to renew it.

It is unlikely that Netflix and Lionsgate will strike a new deal soon. The streaming giant opted not to extend its previous output deal with Lionsgate because Lionsgate made the films available on other platforms. Netflix prefers exclusivity in its output deals, and therefore it’s unlikely that it will strike another deal with Lionsgate.

Chaos Walking will be available for streaming on Hulu at the end of its theatrical run. Lionsgate and Hulu struck a deal to have Lionsgate films appear on Hulu in their first window, which is usually 9 months after the theatrical release.

It is also likely that the film will appear on Lionsgate-owned Starz. Lionsgate has ties to NBCUniversal, which could lead to Chaos Walking appearing on Peacock sometime in the future.
